physical, emotional, and sexual violence; and family poverty,&#8221; the team wrote. &#8220;These adverse experiences raise risks of suicide, adolescent pregnancy, infectious diseases including HIV\/ AIDS, and chronic diseases.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_7035308D-FE7B-72E4-03D6-C12AC02FB52A\">Grandparents are more important than might initially be evident, they added. &#8220;In the USA, 40% of grandparents living with grandchildren serve as their primary caregivers; in the UK, 40% of grandparents provide regular care for grandchildren,&#8221; the researchers wrote.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_32294847-3485-2843-5B3F-C1377EFE535E\">Losing a grandparent can be more than merely upsetting. &#8220;The death of grandparents can also reduce the psychosocial, practical, and\/or financial support for their grandchildren,&#8221; Number one, the researchers recommend: get Covid-19 vaccines to everyone as quickly as possible and help prevent infections in other ways, including mask use and distancing.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_543430C3-FDDD-7FF8-003D-C13B65A10524\">&#8220;As soon as a primary caregiver becomes seriously ill with COVID-19, or a family becomes seriously impacted by other pandemic-associated factors, that family should receive comprehensive evaluation including testing, tracing, and appropriate and supported quarantine of exposed family members. The family should be supported in developing a plan for how children might be cared for if their caregiver were to die,&#8221; they added.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_4A7ACF4C-021C-3723-C75E-C13BBF6265CA\">And societies need to help families affected by the pandemic with economic, educational, and mental health support, the report recommends. Low-cost services to provide all these are already available, and there&#8217;s evidence to support what works, the researchers said<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_4A7ACF4C-021C-3723-C75E-C13BBF6265CA\"><\/div>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_4A7ACF4C-021C-3723-C75E-C13BBF6265CA\">\n<h3>Findings<\/h3>\n<div class=\"section-paragraph\">Globally, from March 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021, we estimate 1\u2009134\u2009000 children (95% credible interval 884\u2009000\u20131\u2009185\u2009000) experienced the death of primary caregivers, including at least one parent or custodial grandparent. 1\u2009562\u2009000 children (1\u2009299\u2009000\u20131\u2009683\u2009000) experienced the death of at least one primary or secondary caregiver. Countries in our study set with primary caregiver death rates of at least one per 1000 children included Peru (10\u00b72 per 1000 children), South Africa (5\u00b71), Mexico (3\u00b75), Brazil (2\u00b74), Colombia (2\u00b73), Iran (1\u00b77), the USA (1\u00b75), Argentina (1\u00b71), and Russia (1\u00b70). The number of children orphaned exceeded the number of deaths among those aged 15\u201350 years. Between two and five times more children had deceased fathers than deceased mothers.<\/div>\n<h3>Interpretation<\/h3>\n<div class=\"section-paragraph\">Orphanhood and caregiver deaths are a hidden pandemic resulting from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetesasia.org\/magazine\/why-the-delta-variant-is-spreading-so-much-faster\/\">COVID-19-associated deaths<\/a>. Accelerating equitable vaccine delivery is key to prevention. Psychosocial and economic support can help families nurture children bereft of caregivers and help to ensure that institutionalization is avoided.
