Vaccination is the primary way to put the pandemic behind us and avoid the return of stringent public health measures,&#8221; the statement added.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad ad--epic ad--tablet\" data-ad-text=\"show\">\n<div data-ad-id=\"ad_nat_btf_01\" data-ad-position=\"tablet\" data-ad-refresh=\"default\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad ad--epic ad--desktop\" data-ad-text=\"show\">\n<div data-ad-id=\"ad_nat_btf_01\" data-ad-position=\"desktop\" data-ad-refresh=\"default\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_D4511909-7AB9-C0A1-0815-E4924B1A42A2\">White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday the White House supports the medical associations&#8217; call to mandate vaccines for all US health personnel.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_9058FF42-101A-6C77-6E9C-E49254B00B10\">&#8220;These actions, in our view, are meant to keep patients and employees safe, and in fact, I expect our federal health care providers may look at similar requirements as they do with other vaccines,&#8221; she said.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__read-all\">\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_5A116FBB-0E44-0902-DF67-E491EA8B5A2C\">The Department of Veterans Affairs announced on Monday it will require many of its frontline health workers to be vaccinated, making it the first area of the federal government to require shots among some of its workers.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_F21515DD-7018-34DA-6582-E49080518CC8\">Other organizations have made moves toward mandates, too. On Wednesday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/07\/21\/us\/new-york-city-vaccine-healthcare-requirement\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> that employees of all public hospitals and health clinics would be required to get vaccinated or take weekly Covid-19 tests.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_4572ECF8-7CA9-3F20-F180-E35B64310233\">While overall vaccination rates among health care workers are higher than in the general population, the letter&#8217;s organizers say that 25% of hospital workers have still not been vaccinated.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_A2B6152F-643C-EAE5-1B0E-E386AD076C26\">According to the American Medical Association, 96% of US physicians surveyed in early June said they were fully vaccinated. Still, the level falls significantly when considering other types of health care workers. The latest numbers from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services found that as of July 11, just 58% of all nursing home staff are considered to be fully vaccinated.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_174D7BCF-253A-7ABD-1ACF-E3880C1A6067\">A person is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after the Pfizer\/BioNTech or Moderna vaccine or two weeks after a single dose of the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine.<\/div>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--standard\">\n<div class=\"el__storyelement--standard el__article--embed\">\n<div class=\"el__article--teaseimage\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/07\/26\/us\/return-to-school-masks-georgia-wellness\/index.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"media__image media__image--responsive aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/210724184707-sara-holton-gard-and-daughter-audrey-medium-plus-169.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"In the Atlanta area, some school districts will require masks. The state&#8217;s biggest district is taking a different approach<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_AB1CD381-8638-0FEB-19AD-E35B64351F5C\">&#8220;Health care workers have an ethical duty to put patients&#8217; health and well-being first, and getting vaccinated for COVID-19 is integral to that duty,&#8221; Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, vice provost for global initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania and organizer of the statement, said in Monday&#8217;s announcement. &#8220;Employer vaccine mandates are effective and lifesaving, and they are especially appropriate in health care and long-term care settings. No patient should have to worry that they could become infected by one of their care providers, and no provider should put their patient at risk.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_EC48737F-BD1E-A473-A968-E398EA424472\">The American Nurses Association also signed the joint statement, with ANA President Ernest Grant saying, &#8220;Nurses must get vaccinated.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_D65BD2C2-5DFD-521E-C181-E39BAFBE13C0\">&#8220;As the largest group of health care professionals, nurses are critical to all facets of COVID-19 response efforts and must strive to remain physically and psychologically safe to function optimally to care for themselves, their patients, and their communities,&#8221; Grant said in a statement.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_1E51363F-401B-01A3-2B87-E39BD77E86EE\">Former US Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams said Sunday that mandates would be &#8220;the quickest way to get people vaccinated,&#8221; but that won&#8217;t happen more broadly until the vaccines have received full approval from the US Food and Drug Administration. Eleven states have yet to vaccinate at least 40% of their residents: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wyoming.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_DE9B8DDD-97F6-E3B3-C772-E39EF880CB66\">According to Johns Hopkins University, the United States is now averaging nearly 52,000 new Covid-19 cases each day, a 61% increase over last week&#8217;s 7-day average. All states except for Colorado reported an increase in cases this past week.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_E7A52154-433D-2220-CD5E-E49386FC5BBB\">According to the US Department of Health and Human Services data, hospitalizations have been increasing for about three weeks, rising about 37% over the past week.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_E7A52154-433D-2220-CD5E-E49386FC5BBB\">\n<div class=\"el__leafmedia el__leafmedia--sourced-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_D6398AB9-9138-E47F-A9F2-E1016810C3C3\">Less than half of the US population is fully vaccinated against\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/07\/25\/health\/us-coronavirus-sunday\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Covid-19<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; and with cases on the rise, experts are urging a return to precautions reminiscent of the earlier days of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_AFFAF868-9354-DE15-4D6A-E10218AAE5C5\">&#8220;What I would say bluntly is: If you are not vaccinated right now in the United States, you should not go into a bar; you should probably not eat at a restaurant. You are at great risk of becoming infected,&#8221; CNN medical analyst Dr. Jonathan Reiner, professor of medicine and surgery at George Washington University, told CNN&#8217;s Fredricka Whitfield.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_39627CC1-6E65-9A0E-152D-E10218AB3DEB\">In 48 states, the rate of new Covid-19 cases in the past week jumped by at least 10% compared to the previous week, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In 34 of those states, the rate of new cases increased by more than 50%.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad ad--epic ad--tablet\" data-ad-text=\"show\">\n<div data-ad-id=\"ad_nat_btf_01\" data-ad-position=\"tablet\" data-ad-refresh=\"default\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad ad--epic ad--desktop\" data-ad-text=\"show\">\n<div data-ad-id=\"ad_nat_btf_01\" data-ad-position=\"desktop\" data-ad-refresh=\"default\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_A57DF6FF-1D06-265B-1BC2-E597746C229C\">And with the highly transmissible Delta variant now the dominant strain, the US could see 200,000 new Covid-19 cases a day within the next six weeks.
