Diabetes mellitus is linked with cardiovascular diseases and kidney and liver failures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although the proper treatment of diabetes includes insulin injection continuously to maintain blood glucose levels, nowadays, researchers follow some natural healers such as Adjunct Therapy for diabetes.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>However, more and more people are turning to alternative medicine and supplements. According to the\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nccih.nih.gov\/health\/diabetes-and-dietary-supplements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, Trusted<span class=\"css-gkhufu icon-hl-trusted-source-after\"><span class=\"sro\">\u00a0Source<\/span><\/span><\/a>, few supplements have enough evidence to support their use for preventing or treating diabetes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Supplements should not be used to replace standard diabetes treatment. Doing so can put your health ahead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to talk with a healthcare professional before using any supplements. Some of these products can interfere with other treatments and medications. Just because a product is natural does not mean it&#8217;s safe to use.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The following supplements have shown promise in improving blood sugar management and other diabetes-related complications.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Fenugreek<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6348 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.diabetesasia.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/funuk.png?resize=300%2C222&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.diabetesasia.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/funuk.png?resize=300%2C222&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.diabetesasia.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/funuk.png?w=757&amp;ssl=1 757w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\nFenugreek seeds lower blood glucose in diabetic patients, improve glucose tolerance in human subjects, and are available as a nutraceutical to reduce hyperglycemia.<br \/>\nThe studies reported in type 2 diabetes that Fenugreek increases insulin resistance in prediabetes.<br \/>\nFenugreek may exert its hypoglycemic effect through its alkaloid content by modulating insulin secretion.<br \/>\nDietary supplementation of 10 g Fenugreek\/day in prediabetes subjects was associated with lower conversion to diabetes with no adverse effects, possibly due to decreased insulin resistance.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetesasia.org\/magazine\/cinnamon-nutraceutical-supplement-for-health\/\">Cinnamon<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cinnamon extract has an increasing effect on the phosphorylation activity of insulin receptors and a decreasing impact on tyrosine phosphatase activity, showing insulin-like properties.<br \/>\nThe effect of cinnamon on the blood glucose of 25 people with type II diabetes showed no significant difference in FBS, glycosylated hemoglobin, glucose tolerance, insulin concentration, and serum lipids concentration by using 1.5 g of cinnamon for six weeks.<br \/>\nUsing 2g cinnamon significantly decreased the blood glucose of type II diabetics after 40 days in diabetic patients.<br \/>\nEffects of 1, 3, and 6 g day of whole cinnamon powder on FBG and serum lipids in 60 people with poorly controlled type II diabetes from Pakistan proved.<br \/>\nAfter 40 days of supplementation, FBG decreased by 18-29%.<br \/>\nSome studies used more than 1 g of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetesasia.org\/magazine\/cinnamon-nutraceutical-supplement-for-health\/\">cinnamon<\/a> daily and reported significant effects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ginger<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6344 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.diabetesasia.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ginger.jpg?resize=300%2C220&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.diabetesasia.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ginger.jpg?resize=300%2C220&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.diabetesasia.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ginger.jpg?resize=1024%2C750&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.diabetesasia.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ginger.jpg?resize=768%2C563&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.diabetesasia.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ginger.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\nGinger contains various bioactive substances such as gingerols, shogaols, zingerone, and paradol.<br \/>\nType 2 diabetic rats fed ginger or gingerol exhibit improved glucose regulation, insulin secretion, and lipid profiles.<br \/>\nGinger is effective for controlling blood glucose levels, and its effects are preventive and therapeutic for Type 2 diabetes.<br \/>\nFindings suggest that ginger can directly increase glucose uptake in an insulin-independent manner that may be beneficial in managing Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>Many studies provide convincing evidence to support the efficacy of ginger in the management of Type 2 diabetes (3 g\/day,1.6 g\/day)<br \/>\nIn one study, using 1 g of cinnamon for 60 days did not decrease the blood glucose of type II diabetes patients.<\/p>\n<p>Mature ginger rhizomes are\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Fibrous\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fibrous\">fibrous<\/a>\u00a0and nearly dry. The juice from ginger roots is often used as a seasoning in\u00a0<a title=\"Indian cuisine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_cuisine\">Indian recipes<\/a>. is prescribed in traditional medicine to lower blood sugar in treating type 2 diabetes patients.<br \/>\nColocynth was administered (100 mg) thrice daily to diabetic cases.<br \/>\nAntioxidant and improve metabolic disorders in diabetic patients by scavenging free radicals and lipid oxidation.<\/p>\n<p>Consumption of 100 mg colocynth three times a day in type 2 diabetes for two months reduced fasting blood sugar and HbA1C, and no gastrointestinal complications or hepatic or renal side effects were observed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nettle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nettle tea controls blood sugar and improves\u00a0cardiovascular function in type 2 diabetes patients.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the side effects and temporary effects of chemical drugs in treating diabetes, herbal medicines such as nettle as a complementary drug and chemical drugs are recommended for people with diabetes.<br \/>\nNettle contains compounds that increase insulin sensitivity in muscle and fat cells, thereby improving glucose controls blood sugar and improves cardiovascular function in type 2 diabetes patients.<br \/>\nNettle aqueous extract reduced serum insulin levels in the insulin-resistant group.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cumin\">Cumin<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The effective components of cumin are aldehyde, \u03b3-Terpinine, \u03b1-Sabinin, \u03b1-Flandren and \u03b1-Kadinin, in the carbohydrate metabolism pathway.<br \/>\nThe anti-diabetic property may be due to the existence of these enzyme inhibitors.<br \/>\nDaily 50 and 100 mg of essential oil of C. cyminum supplements during eight weeks decreased glucose and HbA1c, and green cumin significantly increased serum insulin.<\/p>\n<p>The reductive effect of green cumin was greater than that of treatment with It<\/i>\u00a0is used to flavor numerous commercial food products.<sup id=\"cite_ref-drugs_8-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> In South Asian cooking, it is often combined with\u00a0coriander seeds\u00a0in a powdered mixture called\u00a0<i><a title=\"Dhana jiru\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dhana_jiru\">dhana jeera<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Cumin can be used\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Milling (grinding)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Milling_(grinding)\">as a ground<\/a>\u00a0or as whole seeds. <sup id=\"cite_ref-eb_13-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-nabhan_15-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>It imparts an earthy, warming, and aromatic character to food, making it a staple in certain stews, soups, and spiced gravies such as curry and chili.<sup id=\"cite_ref-nabhan_15-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0It is also used as an ingredient in some pickles and pastries.<sup id=\"cite_ref-29\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<div>\n<h3>Vitamin B1<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Vitamin B1 is also known as thiamine. Many people with diabetes are thiamine deficient. This may contribute to some diabetes complications. Increasing evidence\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nmcd-journal.com\/article\/S0939-4753(18)30201-1\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also links<\/a>\u00a0low thiamine to heart disease and blood vessel damage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Thiamine is water-soluble. However, benfotiamine, a supplemental form of thiamine,\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0lipid-soluble. It more easily penetrates cell membranes. Some\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29863274\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research <\/a>suggests\u00a0that benfotiamine can prevent diabetic complications. However, other studies have not shown any positive effects.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>Alpha-lipoic acid<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a potent antioxidant.\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK564301\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research suggests that<span class=\"css-gkhufu icon-hl-trusted-source-after\"><span class=\"sro\"> the Source<\/span><\/span><\/a> may:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>reduce\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/oxidative-stress-your-faqs-answered\">oxidative stress<\/a><\/li>\n<li>improve vision<\/li>\n<li>improve neuropathic symptoms<\/li>\n<li><a class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S0026-0495(18)30153-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decrease fasting plasma glucose (FPG)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>However, more research is needed. Furthermore, ALA must be taken with caution, as it can potentially lower blood sugar levels to dangerous levels.<\/p>\n<div>\n<h3>Green tea<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Green tea contains polyphenols, which are antioxidants.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The main antioxidant in green tea is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Laboratory studies have suggested that EGCG may have numerous <a class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6617012\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">health benefits<span class=\"css-gkhufu icon-hl-trusted-source-after\"><span class=\"sro\">\u00a0Source<\/span><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0including:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>lower cardiovascular disease risk<\/li>\n<li>improved glucose management<\/li>\n<li>better insulin activity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Traditional\" class=\"mw-headline\">Traditional<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In India, the seeds are powdered and used in different forms, such as <i>kashaya<\/i>\u00a0(decoction),\u00a0<i>arista<\/i>\u00a0(fermented decoction), and\u00a0<i>vati<\/i>\u00a0(tablet\/pills), and processed with\u00a0<i><a title=\"Ghee\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ghee\">ghee<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(a semifluid clarified butter).
