Other countries in tropical Asia also have numerous wild species of\u00a0<i>Curcuma<\/i>. Recent studies have also shown that the taxonomy of\u00a0<i>C. longa<\/i>\u00a0is problematic, with only the specimens from South India being identifiable as\u00a0<i>C. longa<\/i>. The phylogeny, relationships, intraspecific and interspecific variation, and<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Help or Hype?\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/img.webmd.com\/dtmcms\/live\/webmd\/consumer_assets\/site_images\/articles\/health_tools\/turmeric_slideshow\/1800ss_thinkstock_rf_fresh_and_dried_turmeric_roots.jpg?resize=375%2C250&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Help or Hype?\" width=\"375\" height=\"250\" \/> even the identity of other species and cultivars in different parts of the world still need to be established and validated. Various species currently utilized and &#8220;old as &#8220;turmeric&#8221; in other parts of Asia have been shown to belong to several physically similar taxa with overlapping local names.\u00a0 Urmeric has been used in Asia for centuries and is a major part of <a title=\"Ayurveda\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ayurveda\">Ayurveda<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Siddha medicine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Siddha_medicine\">Siddha medicine<\/a>,\u00a0traditional Chinese medicine,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Unani\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unani\">Unani<\/a>, <sup id=\"cite_ref-Chattopadhyay_14-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>and the animistic rituals of\u00a0Austronesian peoples.<sup id=\"cite_ref-KikusawaReid_15-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-McClatchey1993_16-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0It was first used as a\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dye\u00a0<\/a>and<\/span>\u00a0later for its supposed properties in\u00a0<a title=\"Traditional medicine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Traditional_medicine\">folk medicine<\/a>. <sup id=\"cite_ref-nelson_10-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-nccih_11-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>From India, it spread to Southeast Asia along with Hinduism and Buddhism, as the yellow dye is used to color the robes of monks and priests. Before European contact, Turmeric was also found in <a title=\"Tahiti\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tahiti\">Tahiti<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Hawaii\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hawaii\">Hawaii<\/a>, and Easter Island.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-pickersgill_17-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>There is linguistic and circumstantial evidence of the spread and use of turmeric by the Austronesian peoples into Oceania and Madagascar. The populations in Polynesia and Micronesia, in particular, never came into contact with India but use turmeric widely for food and dye. Thus, independent domestication events are also likely.<sup id=\"cite_ref-KikusawaReid_15-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-McClatchey1993_16-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Turmeric was found in\u00a0<a title=\"Farmana\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Farmana\">Farmana<\/a>, between 2600 and 2200 BCE, and in an amerchant&#8217;s tomb in Megiddo, Israel, dating from the second millennium BCE. <sup id=\"cite_ref-18\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>It was noted as a dye plant<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Assyrian<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Assyria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">s&#8217;<\/a><\/span><a title=\"Assyria\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Assyria\">syrians<\/a>&#8216; Cuneiform medical texAshurbanipal&#8217;sanipal\u2019s library at Nineveh from 7th century BCE.<sup id=\"cite_ref-pickersgill_17-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> In\u00a0Medieval Europe, turmeric was&#8221;called &#8220;Indian\u00a0<a title=\"Saffron\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saffron\">saffronn<\/a>.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-pickersgill_17-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"caption inf_caption\">\n<p>A relative of ginger, this vivid yellow-orange spice is common in Indian, Southeast Asian, and Middle Eastern cIt&#8217;sng. The most well-known of these is curcumin. Scientists are excitecurcumin&#8217;srcumin&#8217;s potential to ease depression and help antidepressants work better. One study followed 240 adults with prediabetes and found that taking a curcumin supplement over nine months lowered their odds of developing diabetes.
