On September 27, 2014, PM Modi talked about doing a yoga joint together at the United Nations General Assembly. After this, the General Assembly accepted the proposal on December 11, 2014, and since then International Yoga Day has come into existence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tw-target-text\" class=\"tw-data-text tw-ta tw-text-small\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Translation\"><span lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"0\">Why is celebrated on June 21? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"tw-data-text tw-ta tw-text-small\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Translation\"><span lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"0\">\u00a0Have you ever wondered why International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21? There is a very special reason behind this. Indeed, June 21 is the longest day in the northern hemisphere, which some people call summertime as well. <\/span><span lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"0\">According to the Indian tradition, after the summer solstice, the sun turns southward. It is said that the time of Dakshinaayan of the Sun is very beneficial in achieving spiritual accomplishments and hence celebrates 21 June as &#8216;International Yoga Day&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tw-target-text\" class=\"tw-data-text tw-ta tw-text-small\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Translation\"><span lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"0\">India records recorded record.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"tw-data-text tw-ta tw-text-small\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Translation\"><span lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"0\">\u00a0The first International Yoga Day was celebrated on June 21, 2015. On the first yoga day, India also had two great records. On this day, PM Modi had done yoga on Rajpath with more than 35 thousand people. The first record is 35,985 yoga and the second record is to take part in this festival by people from 84 countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<b>International Day of Yoga<\/b>\u00a0has been\u00a0<a title=\"List of International Days of Yoga\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_International_Days_of_Yoga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">celebrated annually on 21 June<\/a>\u00a0since 2015, following its inception in the\u00a0United Nations General Assembly\u00a0in 2014. <sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Yoga\u00a0is a\u00a0physical,\u00a0mental,\u00a0and\u00a0spiritual practice that originated in\u00a0India.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0The\u00a0Indian Prime Minister,\u00a0Narendra Modi, in his UN address, suggested the date of 21 June, as it is the longest day of the year\u00a0in the\u00a0Northern Hemisphere\u00a0and shares a special significance in many parts of the world.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8835 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.diabetesasia.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/03_06_2019-pm-yoga_192795481592291843184.jpg?resize=502%2C417&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Why do we celebrate Yoga Day on 21st June?\" width=\"502\" height=\"417\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.diabetesasia.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/03_06_2019-pm-yoga_192795481592291843184.jpg?resize=300%2C249&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.diabetesasia.org\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/03_06_2019-pm-yoga_192795481592291843184.jpg?w=650&amp;ssl=1 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Origin\" class=\"mw-headline\">Origin<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The idea of an International Day of Yoga was first proposed by the current Prime Minister of India,\u00a0Narendra Modi, during his speech at the\u00a0United Nations General Assembly\u00a0(UNGA), on 27 September 2014.<sup id=\"cite_ref-BBC_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0He stated:<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"templatequote\"><p>Yoga is an invaluable gift of India&#8217;s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Man and nature\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Man_and_nature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">man and nature<\/a>; and a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but about discovering the sense of oneness with yourself, the world, and nature. Changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, can help in well being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.<\/p>\n<div class=\"templatequotecite\">\u2014\u2009<cite>Narendra Modi,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"UN General Assembly\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UN_General_Assembly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN General Assembly<\/a><\/cite><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Following this initial proposal, the UNGA held informal consultations on the draft resolution, entitled &#8220;International Day of Yoga&#8221;, on 14 October 2014. The consultations were convened by the delegation of India.<sup id=\"cite_ref-economictimes_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0In 2015\u00a0Reserve Bank of India issued a 10 rupee commemorative coin to mark the International Day of Yoga. <sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>In April 2017, the UN Postal Administration (UNPA) issued 10 stamps of Asanas on a single sheet to mark the International Day of Yoga.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"UN_Declaration\" class=\"mw-headline\">UN Declaration<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>On 11 December 2014, India&#8217;s Permanent Representative\u00a0Asoke Mukherji introduced the draft resolution in the United Nations General Assembly. The draft text received broad support from 177 Member States who sponsored the text, which was adopted without a vote. This initiative found support from many global leaders. A total of 177 nations co-sponsored the resolution, which is the highest number of co-sponsors ever for any UNGA Resolution of such nature.<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>When proposing 21 June as the date, Modi said that the date was the longest day of the year in the mass northern hemisphere (shortest in the southern hemisphere), having special significance in many parts of the world. From the perspective of yoga, the summer solstice marks the transition to\u00a0<a title=\"Dakshinayana\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dakshinayana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dakshinayana<\/a>. The second full moon after the summer solstice is known as <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Guru Poornima\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guru_Poornima\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guru Poornima<\/a>.\u00a0<a title=\"Shiva\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shiva\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shiva<\/a>, the first yogi (Adi Yogi), is said to have begun imparting the knowledge of yoga to the rest of mankind on this day and became the first guru (Adi Guru).<sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Following the adoption of the UN resolution, several leaders of the spiritual movement in India voiced their support for the initiative. The founder of the Isha Foundation,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Sadhguru\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sadhguru\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sadhguru<\/a>, stated, &#8220;This could be a kind of a foundation stone to make a scientific approach to the inner well-being of the human being, a worldwide thing&#8230; It&#8217;s a tremendous step for the world.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-Youtube_12-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0The founder of\u00a0Art of Living,\u00a0<a title=\"Ravi Shankar (spiritual leader)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ravi_Shankar_(spiritual_leader)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ravi Shankar<\/a>, lauded the efforts of Modi, saying, &#8220;It is very difficult for any philosophy, religion or culture to survive without state patronage. Yoga has existed so far almost like an orphan. The\u00a0Ministry of AYUSH\u00a0made the necessary arrangements in India. 35,985 people, including PM Modi and dignitaries from 84 nations, performed 21\u00a0asanas\u00a0(yoga postures) for 35 minutes at\u00a0Rajpath in New Delhi, becoming the largest yoga class ever held and with the largest number 84 of participating nations.<sup id=\"cite_ref-14\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-world_record_1_15-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-16\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Similar days have been held\u00a0in cities in India and around the world each year since then.<sup id=\"cite_ref-17\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-18\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-19\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-20\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-21\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-newsgraph.net_22-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Reception\" class=\"mw-headline\">Reception<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>An\u00a0Associated Press\u00a0report in 2015 noted that the first &#8220;International Yoga Day&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-AP_2015_23-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0involved &#8220;millions of yoga enthusiasts&#8221; who &#8220;stretched and twisted&#8221;, as well as Modi and members of his cabinet. It stated that the main road in Delhi had become an exercise area for the occasion, and reported that while Modi was speaking of &#8220;peace and harmony&#8221;,<sup id=\"cite_ref-AP_2015_23-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> some people in India thought the promotion of yoga was a partisan Hindu\u00a0operation. It reported that a sequence of\u00a0Surya Namaskar\u00a0(sun salutations) was dropped because Muslims objected to the implication that the sun was the Hindu god of the sun,\u00a0Surya; the chanting of the Hindu sacred syllable &#8220;Om&#8221; was also dropped. Others considered that the money spent on the event might have been better spent on cleaning Delhi&#8217;s streets.<sup id=\"cite_ref-AP_2015_23-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<i>Christian Science Monitor<\/i>\u00a0wrote in 2016 that the 2014 United Nations resolution had been &#8220;wildly popular&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-CSM_2016_24-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0but noted that yoga had a &#8220;meditative\u00a0component&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-CSM_2016_24-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0and had become known as not only\u00a0a form of physical exercise\u00a0but also a mental and spiritual practice. It gave as evidence the 2015 sermon by\u00a0Pope Francis\u00a0cautioning\u00a0Roman Catholics\u00a0about the idea that yoga could be a path to God; it noted, too, that Modi had replied to the charge that the Day was intended to promote Hinduism with the words &#8220;Yoga is not about the other life. Therefore, it is not a religious practice&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-CSM_2016_24-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><i><a title=\"The Week\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Week\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Week<\/a><\/i> started in 2015 that the government of India&#8217;s purpose in holding International Days of Yoga was to have yoga recognized around the world as &#8220;India&#8217;s cultural property&#8221;,<sup id=\"cite_ref-TW_2015_25-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0citing India&#8217;s minister of yoga, Shripad Yesso Naik as stating &#8220;We&#8217;re trying to establish to the world that it&#8217;s ours.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-TW_2015_25-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0<i>The Week<\/i> wrote that this was not likely to succeed, not least because many types of yoga were already being practiced in the Western world.<sup id=\"cite_ref-TW_2015_25-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0The article noted that\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Evangelical Christian\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Evangelical_Christian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christian evangelicals<\/a>\u00a0agreed with the Indian government that yoga was &#8220;primarily a Hindu spiritual practice&#8221;,<sup id=\"cite_ref-TW_2015_25-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> but quoted the scholar of religion Ann Gleig as saying that most Western yoga was markedly changed by being in the West, and was devoid of religious content; the &#8220;ironically&#8221;\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-TW_2015_25-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>agreeing views of strongly religious Hindus and Christians were &#8220;historically flawed&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-TW_2015_25-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For 5,000 years, yoga has been an integral part of Indian culture.
