This treatment has saved many lives around the world. When not detected and managed early, diabetes can lead to serious and life-threatening adverse complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For people at risk of type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, it is important to support prevention, early diagnosis, and timely treatment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For people living with diabetes<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, awareness and access to the correct information and best available medicines and tools to support self-care is vital to delay or prevent complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Healthcare professionals need\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">access to sufficient training and resources to detect complications early and provide the best possible care.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Our slogan for the 2023 campaign is:\u00a0<\/span><strong><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/worlddiabetesday.org\/type-2-diabetes-risk-assessment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Know INDIVIDUAL risk<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Know PERSON response<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">An estimated 422 million adults were living with diabetes in 2014,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0more than 108 million in 1980. The\u00a0prevalence of TYPE 2DM has increased nearly Twice since 1980, from 4.7% to 8.5% in the\u00a020-79-year-old adult population, reflecting an increase in Many<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors such as<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0being overweight or obese or physical activity. Over the last decade, diabetes prevalence has risen faster in low\u2014and middle-income countries rather than in high-income countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wXtO4osXbb0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Diabetes is a major cause<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0of complications: heart attacks, blindness, kidney failure, heart failure, stroke, and lower limb gangrene. A healthy diet with a low carbohydrate diet rich in micronutrients, physical activity, and tobacco non-use can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. Diabetes can be managed, and its adverse effects can be reduced or postponed with medication, regular screening, and treatment for complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), resolution\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/undocs.org\/A\/RES\/61\/225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">61\/225<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, designated 14 November as World Diabetes Day. The\u00a0appeal recognized &#8220;the dire need for multilateral efforts to promote and raise people&#8217;s health and provide access to treatment, healthcare support, and education.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The UN resolution also encourages\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Member States to develop national policies for the prevention, treatment, and care of diabetes in line with the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">sustainable development<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0of their<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0healthcare systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Access to diabetes care<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The theme for World Diabetes Day WDD (2021-23) was access to diabetes care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Since 100 years of the discovery of insulin, millions of people with diabetes in the world cannot access the care they need because of various constraints. People with diabetes require care and support resources to manage their condition and avoid complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The 100th anniversary of insulin&#8217;s discovery presents a unique opportunity to bring about positive modifications for the approximately 460 million people affected by diabetes and the millions more at future risk. The United Global Community and the global diabetes community can influence people&#8217;s determination to bring about meaningful change.
