Dr. Tom Frieden served as Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Commissioner of the New York City Health Department. His work made New York City’s tuberculosis control program and overall health department models for the world, established effective programs in India, and improved morale, effectiveness, and impact at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Tom Frieden’s influential publications have identified what, how, and why to improve health. Dr. Tom Frieden is a Senior Fellow for Global Health at the Council on Foreign Relations

The COVID-19 pandemic is the greatest public health crisis the world has faced in more than a century. With over 1.6 million dead and 73 million sickened in 2020 alone, the virus has left very few places and people untouched. Leveraging the expertise of our Resolve to Save Lives initiative’s Prevent Epidemics team, with staff from across the organization, Vital Strategies has supported the COVID-19 response in over 50 countries while continuing our core work to make sure essential services are maintained, and public health systems strengthening continues.

Through our Resolve To Save Lives initiative’s Prevent Epidemics program, we’ve provided on-the-ground training for health care workers in over 7,000 facilities in Africa.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, we have worked to provide reliable, science-based resources and protect people’s lives by:

  • Providing on-the-ground training to promote health care worker safety in over 7,000 facilities throughout Africa
  • Producing timely, data-driven tools, guidance, and analysis on COVID-19 to inform the response of governments across the globe.
  • Creating the Partnership for Evidence-Based Response to COVID-19 (PERC), a public-private partnership that supports evidence-based measures to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on African Union Member States
  • Leveraging technology to enhance the COVID-19 response with new software that helps case investigators and contact tracers
  • Providing rapid, flexible funding to support urgent needs in 21 countries
  • Helping to develop public health laws and legal guidance related to measures addressing COVID-19 with a reach of more than 160 million people
  • Using strategic communication to save lives by countering misinformation and producing high quality, evidence-based risk communication materials
  • Supporting care for chronic disease patients during COVID-19
